Observations, Travel

Admittedly not the most beautiful beach in the world (the water is grey-green, the sand an average yellow and been cloudy most of the time), but the Sailing Club must be one of the most chilled out places in the world — right up there with Hotel Raya in the Aeolian Islands, Bonaire and Tulum. The total lack of actual sailboats is quickly forgotten when you find out this beach one of the (if not the) best spots for kiteboarding in South East Asia. We just unlucky with the rain and clouds, which means the dunes don’t heat up the air which generates the constant, 25+ knot winds … which make this beach so famous for any and all types of surfing. We hang out close to the boys from the Airwaves Kiteboarding School; waiting eagerly for the wind and looking for the thumbs up from Phi when the flag has been flapping steadily for more than a few minutes. In the mean time, we distract ourselves or should I say, keep ourselves entertained: out on a field trip using the resorts’ dangerously under-maintained mountain bikes to the village/town and the red sand dunes (not as spectacular as the white sand dunes, but we of course cannot venture too far in case the wind comes up!), we have massages at the spa (or multiple treatments a day like for Patsy the spa queen), we eat the delicious food and read our books while working on a tan in between rain showers. The cook is fantastic and as we don’t venture out of the resort often, we’re getting close to having tried just about everything on the menu, and everything is absolutely delicious; from breakfast granola, the hummus from the mezze platter, the fish skewers, the pumpkin with feta cheese, to the deserts and cakes. There’s goes not gaining weight this long weekend! This evening we went out for dinner and had super-fresh snapper, clams and tiger prawns – huge and fabulously prepared. It implies another run along the beach tomorrow morning to balance off the calories, and another ocean swim playing ‘block the waves’ like my brother and I used to do in the Caribbean. Apart from the fact that I came here to kiteboard and the wind is not right or not there, we –Hong Kong diva Patsy, ultimate babe Nicoletta and myself- are thoroughly enjoying the relaxed atmosphere here and the extended moments of just ‘being’. Just staring out at the waves, peering alongside the beach, sipping tea or a cocktail at the bar … you don’t have to do anything or think about anything, just be. Maybe I’m reaching the point in my life that I can start to learn how to meditate, and think of absolutely nothing, or at least, nothing in particular …
